West Park Healthcare Centre, Toronto

West Park Healthcare Center was founded as a tuberculosis sanitarium in 1904 on a 27-acre campus with the outdoors as its primary treatment. The center’s primary services include tuberculosis and respiratory care as well as treatment for patients with long-term inhalation and respiratory problems.

Over the years, West Park’s expertise has also expanded to provide specialized care and critical care for amputations, strokes, brain injuries, and severe musculoskeletal injuries.

The new replacement center will house a supportive care facility that was once scattered across three buildings while living on green campuses in Toronto’s west side.

Creating a recovery environment for recovery

Guided by the main objective of developing a “park” in West Park, the site prioritizes the connection between the outside and the house by bringing natural light into the building and prioritizing the views of the community, the Humber River, and the nearby green space.

Recognizing that the environment improves health, especially for those who cannot walk or use mobility aids, the hospital is designed to make patients feel connected to the world around them, including large windows in patient rooms that offer views outside.

In addition, the project also includes outdoor access with a staircase on the ground floor and natural elements such as forests, rivers, and plants are displayed inside.

Using race theory to provide a supportive environment

For the interior design, the project team used color concepts based on images of the surrounding Humber River Valley in the image palette.

Color schemes, including earthy greens, soft blues, warm woods, and neutral shades, and images are used on a large scale, such as floor-to-ceiling images, and on a small scale, including artwork and lighting options, depending on the size of the space.

A flexible maintenance environment

The main design principles incorporated in this building are flexibility, adaptability, and accessibility.

Many patient rooms can be adapted for other care such as respite care or other medical care and can be equipped with equipment depending on the flow.

Entrances to public areas are easily accessible whether you are walking or using a wheelchair or other assistive device.
